The official The Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer arrives revealing the surprise return of Pogo in the alternate timeline and the new threat. The new season based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s graphic novels will see the Umbrellas having finally made it back to the present, only to learn they’ve created a time paradox resulting in their adoptive father Reginald Hargreeves having adopted a different group of kids in the past and created the Sparrow Academy, led by formerly deceased Ben. As they contend with the Sparrows, the Umbrellas also learn of a destructive entity being unleashed and threatening to consume the world whole.
Elliot Page leads the ensemble cast of The Umbrella Academy alongside Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Adam Godley, Colm Feore, Justin H. Min and Ritu Arya. Developed by Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater and created by showrunner Steve Blackman, the series has received largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike for its unique tone, time travel storytelling and character development. With The Umbrella Academy also proving to be a strong ratings contender for Netflix, the show received a season 3 renewal in November 2020 and audiences are finally getting a taste of what’s to come from the next chapter of the series.
As the show finally gears up for its return, netflix has released the official The Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer. Set to a cover of The Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz,” the video shows new footage of the Sparrows fighting against the Hargreeves, including Ben’s tentacle-summoning powers, as well as revealing the surprise return of Pogo and the new threat of the world-eating Kugelblitz. Check out the exciting new trailer below:
Introduced in season 1 of the series, Pogo was seen as a father figure to many of The Umbrella Academy’s members due to Reginald Hargreeves’ distant and borderline abusive treatment of his adoptive children. Despite their love for Pogo, his close relationship with the Umbrellas’ patriarch also led to him keeping a number of secrets from the group, including the fact that Page’s Viktor, formerly Vanya, had powers after frequently being told she didn’t, resulting in her murdering Pogo after her transformation into the White Violin in the season 1 finale. Pogo would make a brief appearance in The Umbrella Academy season 2 when Diego and Five sneak into Reginald’s company offices in 1963 and come across a young version of the talking chimpanzee.
With The Umbrella Academy season 3 resulting in the Hargreeves finding themselves in an unfamiliar timeline, it will be interesting to see how Pogo’s return is addressed, as he clearly still retains the level of intelligence to speak that he picked up from Reginald, though appears to be using this as an enforcer for a motorcycle gang. It’s also interesting to note the Umbrella Academy season 3 trailer reveals the new location of the Hotel Obsidian, seemingly countering previous teases of the introduction of the Hotel Oblivion from the comics especially given its downtown setting, though with the new threat of the Kugelblitz seemingly being created in an underground structure akin to that which housed a similar being in the comics, it could be a change made for the show to keep things a little grounded. Only time will tell what other exciting reveals the show has in store for audiences when The Umbrella Academy season 3 premieres on June 22.
