Metzeler launches new Karoo 4 dual sport tires

Successor to the award-winning Karoo 3, the new Karoo 4 represents the latest generation of the Metzeler product family: a studded tire intended for equipping adventure and maxi enduro motorcycles, designed for on/off use.

The new Karoo 4 improves on even the latest, most advanced mid- and large-displacement enduro bikes that roam both on asphalt and off-road, working in harmony with the most advanced rider assistance systems. Karoo 4 is a very versatile product that offers, compared to its predecessor Karoo 3, a significant improvement in wet and off-road performance, even under full load.

Who is Karoo 4 for?

According to Metzeler, the new Karoo 4 is aimed at adventure motorcycle owners, riders who use their motorcycles for 50% on-road 50% off-road journeys, looking for limitless experiences. They are looking for reliability and performance in different weather conditions, stability even under full load and mileage.

The Karoo 4 is also aimed at riders who want to test their skills and the capabilities of their bike, they appreciate off-road performance in a tire. Also, owners of “scrambler” style machines, who demand an aggressive look without sacrificing performance on the road, with particular reference to handling and safety in the wet.

The tread pattern

The Karoo 4 features a revolutionary patented tread design, which increases the tire’s overall performance levels both on asphalt and on different types of off-road terrain.

Regarding on-road performance, Metzeler engineers have worked to improve overall handling and wet handling in particular, developing a knobby pattern that allows you to safely tackle certain lean angles even in wet conditions. In the off-road area, Karoo 4 increases the level of performance, especially on very soft surfaces, such as sand, mud and clay.

The tread of the Karoo 4 has these main characteristics:

– Patented DETRATEC™ design, consisting of central spoon-shaped buttons, which are separated from the side buttons by a wavy longitudinal groove. The combination of these three elements has a double function: on the one hand, it traps the ground between the studs to generate lateral thrust, and on the other hand, it releases it thanks to self-cleaning properties.

– Multi-pitch design. The groups of lugs are repeated with an irregular cadence to soften the impact of the tread against the asphalt and improve ride smoothness;

– Optimized footprint area that includes a greater number of buttons in the contact area, compared to Karoo 3, to improve handling and integration with electronic driving aids;

– Patented DYMATEC™ technology, a design methodology that preserves the functional geometries of the studs and the performance of the tire over time. In detail, this technology features variable groove wall angles based on their position along the tread to maximize tread strength and wear uniformity.
